3RD FEBRUARY IN THE HISTORY OF MALAWI.

The official narrative indicates that Nyasaland’s freedom fighter John Chilembwe was shot dead on 3rd February 1915 in Mulanje as he fled to Mozambique.

In October 2023, a digitised archival material was posted on social media by a historian at Lane College in Tennessee (USA) called Dr. Azaria Mbughuni. This archival material is a marriage certificate revealing that on 3rd February 1934, Dr Kamuzu Banda officially married Ms. Robertine Edmonds at the Davidson County Court in the State of Tennessee (USA).

On 3rd February 1963, national celebrations for the attainment of self-government, were held at Rangely Stadium in Blantyre where Dr. Kamuzu Banda appeared to the public for the first time in his capacity as Nyasaland’s Prime Minister following a swearing ceremony which was held at the state house in Zomba two days earlier.

On 3rd February 1989, most of the senior civil servants (principal secretaries, directors, heads of departments in the ministries etc) returned to their respective offices after meeting Dr Kamuzu Banda at Sanjika Palace the previous day. At this meeting, Dr Kamuzu Banda lambasted these technocrats for sabotaging his efforts to develop the Southern and Central Regions of the country. 10 days later in Ntcheu district during a crop inspection rally, Dr. Kamuzu Banda announced that all teachers should serve in a region of their origin. This disproportionately inconvenienced teachers from the Northern Region. This directive was followed by a wave of sackings with the loss of pension benefits of high-ranking civil servants from the Northern Region like John Phiri the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Trade and Industry; James Chatupa the Chief Geologist; GG Ntawali the Commissioner of Police for Central Region; Hastings Chunga the General Manager of Small Enterprise Development Organisation of Malawi; Stanford FC Munyenyembe the Chief Resident Magistrate for Blantyre.

The landmark ruling nullifying the presidential elections held in May 2019, was delivered by the constitutional court on 3rd February 2020. Among others, the court called for fresh elections within 150 days and also reinstated Dr. Saulos Chilima as Vice President of the republic.

On 3rd February 2022, President Lazarus Chakwera delivered a State of Nation address during the opening of the 49th session of parliament. This was a few days after announcing his new cabinet following the first cabinet reshuffle since assuming office in June 2020.

On 3rd February 2023, some representatives of civil society organizations converged at Parliament in Lilongwe to convey their concerns to the legislators against the interdiction of the Director of the Anti-Corruption Bureau Ms. Martha Chizuma. However, the legislators were advised not to come out to meet the activists on security grounds.
