One of the most intriguing questions surrounding the Mwanza War of October 1967 is whether foreign countries indeed intervened to militarily support the Malawi Government.

Addressing Parliament on 12 December 1967, President of the Republic of Malawi, Dr Kamuzu Banda made a remarkable revelation:
> “When the news of Yatuta’s invasion of this country reached our friends (in October 1967), I got offers of assistance from at least five countries… We have friends, we are not alone!”
Although Dr Kamuzu Banda deliberately declined to identify these five countries in his address to parliament, his statement raises important questions.
1. Which were the five countries that offered assistance to the Malawi Government during the Mwanza War of October 1967?
2. Did any of these five countries actually provide the support they had offered?
Drawing on archival records, diplomatic correspondence, eyewitness testimonies, and other historical sources, ‘The Mwanza War of October 1967: Cold War Shadows in Malawi’ by Paliani Chinguwo investigates these questions and presents evidence on the international dimension of the Mwanza War.
