NEW BOOK REVEALS THE UNTOLD STORIES OF CASUALTIES AND FOREIGN INTERVENTION IN THE MWANZA WAR OF OCTOBER 1967.

By Ali Gunde

The Lost History Foundation (LHF), in collaboration with Wissen Books, has released ‘The Mwanza War of October 1967: Cold War Shadows in Malawi’, written by Paliani Chinguwo (PhD). The book re-examines the events surrounding the 17 armed fighters led by Yatuta Chisiza and places the Mwanza War within the broader regional and global political struggles of the 1960s.

For decades, discussions surrounding the Mwanza War have been dominated by two major questions that continue to generate debate:

1. Did Malawi Government forces suffer any casualties during the confrontation?

2. And were there foreign actors who intervened on the side of the Malawi Government?

These questions have been contested in popular narratives of the Mwanza War. The new book addresses these two key questions.

Drawing from credible sources, including eyewitness testimonies, published materials, and archival records, ‘The Mwanza War of October 1967: Cold War Shadows in Malawi’ demonstrates that the confrontation was not without casualties on the government side. The book presents evidence showing that members of the Malawi security forces encountered casualties during the operation against Yatuta Chisiza and his lieutenants.

The book also explores another important dimension of the war — the role of external actors. While much of the attention has focused on the international support received by Yatuta Chisiza and his lieutenants, the book presents evidence that the Malawi Government also benefited from external assistance during the Mwanza War.

This aspect of the Mwanza War reflects the broader reality of the Cold War period, when conflicts in Africa were often connected to wider geopolitical rivalries. Local political struggles became linked to regional and international interests, with different international actors seeking to influence outcomes.

The Mwanza War of October 1967 was not simply a confrontation between a small group of armed fighters and the Malawi Government. It was an event shaped by political tensions inside Malawi, regional liberation struggles, and the international politics of the Cold War era.

The book is available on Amazon, while printed copies can be purchased in Malawi through pre-order only at MWK 70,000/copy.
