The delegation, led by Makewana, departed from the Msinja shrine at 8:15 a.m. on Friday 30 August 2024, embarking on a significant journey to the sacred site of Kapirintiwa, nestled within the Dzalanyama Forest on the Mozambique side of the border.
The procession was joined by representatives from Chipembedzo cha Makolo, who had traveled from Blantyre, as well as Chiefs from Msinja and neighboring villages, including Tsang’oma, Chithonje, and Masanda.
Their collective presence underscored the importance of this pilgrimage in reaffirming the spiritual and cultural bonds that connect these communities.
Upon reaching Kapirintiwa, a deeply symbolic ritual was performed. Makewana, alongside Mai Soko, one of the Trustees of Chipembedzo cha Makolo, poured a libation at the sacred site.
This act, rich in cultural significance, was intended to honor the ancestors and invoke blessings for the future. The pouring of libations is a traditional practice deeply rooted in the spiritual customs of the Maravi people, serving as a bridge between the past and the present.
This pilgrimage was made possible through the support of the Lost History Foundation (LHF), which funded the event as part of its ongoing project on cultural history.
The LHF’s commitment to preserving and revitalizing the heritage of the Maravi Kingdom was evident in the meticulous planning and execution of this event.
The foundation’s broader project aims to restore the historical and spiritual significance of Kapirintiwa, ensuring that this sacred site continues to be a place of pilgrimage and cultural remembrance for generations to come.
The day’s events not only marked a moment of deep reflection and spiritual renewal but also served as a powerful reminder of the enduring legacy of the Maravi Kingdom.
Through the efforts of the Lost History Foundation and the dedication of those who participated in the pilgrimage, the rich cultural history of this ancient kingdom is being brought to life once more, fostering a renewed sense of identity and connection among its descendants.
