PROF. EDGE KANYONGOLO: FROM STUDENT REVOLUTIONARY AND ACTOR TO A
PROFESSOR OF LAW
Prof. Edge Kanyongolo stands among Malawi’s most distinguished legal
scholars and human rights activists. While many know him for his immense
contributions to legal education and constitutionalism during the
transition to multi-party democracy between 1992 and 1994, his story of
activism began when he was a student.

Prof Edge Kanyongolo

On 3rd February 1983, he was arrested alongside five fellow students at
the University of Malawi (Chancellor College)—Zangaphe Chizeze, Mac
Willie Killion, Tubby Chibwana, and two others. They were accused of
founding an underground Marxist political movement at the campus. The
group was taken to Maula Prison in Lilongwe for intense interrogations
and later transferred to the notorious Mikuyu Prison in Zomba, a
facility known for detaining political prisoners.

At the time of his arrest, Prof. Edge Kanyongolo was in his third year
pursuing a law degree. He was also a celebrated artist and activist in
the cultural space, particularly through his performances with the
Travelling Theatre, a dynamic drama troupe based at Chancellor College.
He and his colleague Zangaphe Chizeze captivated audiences across the
country with bold and thought-provoking productions.

Just two months before his arrest, Prof. Edge Kanyongolo was voted *Best
Actor in Chichewa Drama* in the 1982-End of Year- MBC Radio Listeners’
Polls.
