PARALLELS IN THE TIME OF TRAGIC LOSS: TODAY AND SEPTEMBER 1962

Malawians are experiencing a profound sense of grief today following the death of the Vice President Dr Saulos Chilima in a plane crash. This is similar to the deep sorrow that gripped the nation in September 1962.

The unexpected passing of Dunduzu Chisiza in a tragic car accident, a prominent political figure and Deputy Finance Minister at the time, had sent shockwaves through the country and countries abroad. He was earmarked to take over as Finance Minister at Independence two years later.

News of Dunduzu Chisiza’s car accident at Thondwe (Zomba) left the entire nation stunned and heartbroken. He died barely two months after he chaired an International Economic Symposium at Kwacha Conference Centre (Blantyre) to explore the economic trajectory of Nyasaland after independence. The Symposium was attended by distinguished scholars from Africa, Europe, America and Asia.

A memorial service for Dunduzu Chisiza was held at his residence in Zomba, followed by a solemn journey to Blantyre, during which countless mourners lined along the route to pay their final respects.

Dunduzu Chisiza’s untimely passing resonated not only within Malawi but also across Africa and beyond. Messages of condolence poured in from international communities. A poignant display of respect was the spontaneous closure of shops and offices in Limbe as his body arrived from Zomba. Another memorial service was held in Blantyre before his final journey by air to Karonga for burial.

Some questioned the circumstances surrounding his death while others vowed to avenge his death which was believed to be an assassination. Amidst this, a unifying voice immediately came from Dunduzu Chisiza’ s older brother, Yatuta Chisiza. He bravely addressed the nation, urging for calm acceptance of the tragic accident.

This stands in contrast to the current situation, where leaders from Dr Saulos Chilima’s party (UTM) and others have taken the commendable step of urging the people to maintain peace while mourning Dr Saulos Chilima.

Today, as we navigate our national grief, let us maintain peace and respect during this difficult time. Just as the nation eventually found solace and moved forward in 1962 upon the tragic and painful loss of the then deputy Finance Minister Dunduzu Chisiza and “future” Finance Minister, we too will overcome this pain and grief over Dr Saulos Chilima s death as time passes.

Long Live the Spirit of Dunduzu Chisiza!!
